Fluke is Home

We drove to Titusville Municipal Marina Friday evening to meet up with Capt Mike and Chepa. Carol took the car home and Eddie and I stayed on board. An 0500 hrs wakeup call was followed by departure around 0600 (still plenty dark). The sun came up shortly and we had a nice day going south on the ICW to Vero Beach. Only the first two bridges had to open. After that all were 65' fixed clearance.

We saw many, many dolphins that played in our wake. We had light winds and intermittent sun and clouds, but no rain. By 1500 hrs we shut down the engine in our home slip. What a great feeling.

Fluke is in Florida!

Capt Mike called from Fernandina Beach last night. The weather has not been nice and this last leg had some serious shallow areas. The shallow water alarm went off almost continuously for several miles. As far as he could tell they never hit bottom. Today they are headed for Palm Coast, and for Titusville on Friday.

Poem for the season

I'm dreaming of a Bahamian spring
Just like the past ones dear to me
Where the waters glisten
And Ursa listens
To hear dolphins swimming in the sea.

I'm dreaming of a Bahamian spring
With every Christmas card I write
Where the sands are clean and warm
And gentle breezes blow
During nights that are starry and bright.

FLUKE is on the way!

After many months and trips to New England and Charleston, FLUKE is finally on the way.

Capt. Mike Carter picked up Whale Song in Charleston yesterday and traveled to Skull Creek Marina on Hilton Head Island. Distance covered was about 85 miles. Mike said the boat ran great and there were no problems other than dumping rain just after they tied up. We want to thank Ted and Harriette Buckenham (the previous owners) for taking such good care of her for the last six years.

This is a very exciting time for us. It is the beginning of a new adventure.

Runaway Barge

Hurricane Wilma 2005

As Hurricane Wilma was winding down this barge drifted past our new pilings. It was headed toward the Vero Beach Municipal Marina, but luckily it got hung up on a seawall before getting to the marina.

Pilings - At Last!

Wilco-Marine Construction finally brought the BIG barge and crane to replace the 10" and 12" pilings that were broken during Hurricane Jeanne (Sept 2004). We were on the waiting list for 10 months.

We finally have a boat slip again. Now we just need the boat!

The Trip That Didn't Happen

Today was going to be the day we drove to AL to look at APOGEE. That was before Maurice Nunas on AKAMA (WB #2) told me his boat had a cored hull. John at Krogen confirmed the first six WBs were built that way. We are not interested.

Next up, we might be headed north to check out a newer WB. It is more money, but hopefully is worth it.

WBs and Memorial Weekend

On Friday, the broker called to say that the buyer had accepted the boat so that deal didn't fall through as we had hoped. However, he did say that another WB owner that was leaving FL for Maine for the summer was considering selling. We drove to St Augustine Sat pm and stayed at Dad's house. We visited the WB which was anchored off Conch House on Sunday morning. The owner expected to decide for sure this summer so we are not holding our breath. We drove back to Vero afterward in time for a late lunch.

I also talked with the owner of another WB for sale in AL on Friday. He sent a lot of good pictures of the boat. The downside is this is an older WB. What to do?

Rejected, New Hope

Well, it was no surprise that we could not agree on a value for Ketos.

While dealing with that disappointment we got a call from the broker to tell us that the deal on another Whaleback might be falling apart. It is not as new as Ketos, but we are sure we could be quite happy on this one. The original owner outfitted her very nicely. Also, we know what the owner will take and the boat has completed survey. It is hard not to get our hopes up even though the current deal will probably go through.

This week has been an emotional roller coaster.

An offer

Well, we made an offer today on Ketos (4827WB). We are not too hopeful because the seller doesn't seem to be very motivated.

Wish us luck.
